India has revealed its priorities for its BRICS chairship in 2026, focusing on ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.’ The announcement was made during the initial meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas held in New Delhi on February 9-10. The meeting, chaired by MEA Secretary Sudhakar Dalela and India’s BRICS Sherpa, discussed various thematic areas such as health, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and more.
BRICS Sherpas and officials from several countries including Brazil, China, Russia, and South Africa participated in the meeting. The discussions included presentations on cooperation in sports, youth engagement, cultural activities, and various forums like the BRICS Business Council. The theme and priorities set by India for its Chairship were well-received by BRICS members and partner countries, emphasizing resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.
Representatives of BRICS Partner countries also attended the meeting, appreciating India’s people-centric approach. The delegates, during their visit, explored cultural sites in New Delhi like the National Crafts Museum and Akshardham Temple. The BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas will continue to convene regularly throughout the year to coordinate activities across different thematic tracks.
During a meeting with BRICS 2026 Sherpas and Country Representatives, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar commended the suggestions and perspectives put forward to advance the priorities of resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. He highlighted the significance of BRICS as a platform for international cooperation and consultation, especially as it marks 20 years of existence.
