India is gearing up to host the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, centered on three key themes: people, planet, and progress. The summit aims to move global discussions on artificial intelligence from theory to practical outcomes, as highlighted by Namgya Khampa, India’s Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington. Khampa emphasized that AI is now a pivotal factor influencing economic competitiveness, geopolitical dynamics, and societal results.
At a recent event titled “US-India Strategic Cooperation on AI,” organized by Observer Research Foundation America (ORF America) and other partners in Washington, Khampa underscored that India’s AI strategy is rooted in its success with digital public infrastructure. This infrastructure has shown how affordable, inclusive technology can revolutionize governance on a large scale. Platforms like Aadhaar and the unified payments interface have significantly enhanced access to services, finance, and identity for over 1.4 billion Indians.
Khampa stressed that India perceives AI not as a standalone solution but as a tool to enhance existing digital infrastructure. By integrating AI into systems, India aims to make them more intelligent, responsive, productive, and accessible. This approach seeks to transition AI from a theoretical concept to an everyday transformative force. The upcoming AI Impact Summit, to be hosted by India, will be a pioneering global event from a country in the Global South, focusing on broadening participation and ownership in global AI governance.
