India has expressed optimism that the Bangladeshi government will take action against extremist groups and safeguard the minority community following incidents of desecration involving Hindu deities and images, leading to widespread protests in Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized the need for Bangladesh to address the desecration issues and ensure the safety of minorities amidst escalating tensions.
Protests have intensified in Bangladesh after reports of the alleged desecration of a Lord Ram image by radical Islamists during a demonstration against the construction of a tall statue of the deity in Gaibandha district. Thousands of Hindus in Dhaka marched with torches chanting “Jai Shri Ram” and demanding accountability for the desecration incidents, as the construction of the statue remains halted.
In response to the situation, Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, Editor of Bangladeshi newspaper Blitz, highlighted the strong stance taken by Hindus in Bangladesh against the actions of Islamists. The Hindu community in Bangladesh has protested against the disrespect shown towards Lord Ram’s portraits and vowed to continue their demonstrations nationwide, marking a significant pushback against the recent incidents.
Tensions escalated further when Bangladeshi authorities suspended the construction of the Lord Ram statue at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda and Kali Temple in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district. The decision, announced by temple advisor Shyamal Kumar Mahant, has drawn criticism, with some alleging that the suspension was influenced by Islamist groups opposing the project, sparking a wave of reactions and concerns.
