India has reiterated its plea for safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted commerce in the region for global economic and energy security. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted India’s vigilance on West Asia developments, advocating for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to maintain peace.
Following an attack on United Arab Emirates (UAE) merchant vessels by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the death of an Indian sailor and injuries to several others, India summoned Iranian diplomats to express strong condemnation and demand an immediate halt to such assaults. The country stressed the need for dialogue and peace-building measures for stability in West Asia.
The two UAE tankers, Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were struck by Iranian cruise missiles, causing casualties among the crew, including 30 Indian seafarers. One Indian lost his life, and nine others sustained injuries, with two in critical condition. Indian seafarers have been significantly affected by attacks on commercial shipping in the region, facing the highest number of fatalities among all nationalities.
