India has transformed its public health delivery system by incorporating AI into a unified strategy, addressing specialist shortages and enhancing proactive care. Through AI tools integrated into programs like the National TB Elimination Programme and the National Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme, non-specialists have been empowered to conduct advanced screenings, leading to a 27% decrease in adverse TB outcomes and the detection of over 4,500 outbreaks. This shift is reinforced by initiatives such as e-Sanjeevani, facilitating 282 million consultations with AI-assisted diagnosis, and the UdyogYantra AI System for monitoring malnutrition.

This comprehensive approach extends across various healthcare domains, from infectious disease management to cancer care and the modernization of traditional Ayurvedic medicine. India is set to host the Global South’s inaugural international AI summit in New Delhi from February 16-20, uniting global leaders, policymakers, technology companies, innovators, and experts. The summit will focus on AI-centric policy, research, industry, and public involvement.

The government emphasizes that AI plays a crucial role in bridging healthcare delivery gaps, enhancing medical device quality, services, and drug accessibility, while also making healthcare more affordable and reachable. AI-driven healthcare ecosystems aid in early detection, screening, improved clinical decision-making, and remote care provision. Notably, in March 2024, the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned the comprehensive national-level IndiaAI mission with a budget allocation of Rs 10,371.92 crore to promote socio-economic development through AI. The IndiaAI Mission initiatives are fostering innovation in AI-based healthcare applications.

A key component of the mission is the IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, which aims to create, expand, and encourage the adoption of impactful AI solutions to tackle significant national challenges. Enhanced AI-enabled healthcare delivery is among the key outcomes of this initiative, as stated by the official statement.
