Those interested in joining the Technical Branch of the Indian Air Force (IAF) as officers can now apply using their Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores. Candidates with a valid GATE score will be directly shortlisted for testing at the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs) under this new initiative. They will be exempt from the preliminary written examination, known as the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT).
The GATE Score scheme is specifically for induction into the Technical Branch. The AFCAT will remain the standard admission test for all IAF branches, including the Technical Branch for candidates without a valid GATE score. The entry-level educational qualifications for the GATE Score scheme will align with the existing criteria for the Technical Branch through AFCAT.
A comprehensive list of acceptable GATE subjects has been officially released by the IAF in AFCAT Notification 02/2026, accessible at https:\www.afcat.edcil.co.in and www.careeriaf.gov.in. Eligible candidates can apply for the Technical Branch through both the AFCAT and GATE Score schemes. Candidates aged 20 to 26 with a four-year B.E./B.Tech degree in eligible engineering disciplines, scoring at least 60% aggregate marks, and passing with Physics and Mathematics are eligible for the test.
Selection for Technical Officers through GATE involves two main stages: Shortlisting based on GATE exam performance and an AFSB interview evaluating personality, aptitude, and suitability for an IAF career. Candidates should be aware of the different service selection boards for various branches of the armed forces: SSB for the Army and AFSB for the Air Force.
