Indian Ambassador to Austria, Shambhu S Kumaran, held discussions with Arnold Kammel, Secretary General of the Austrian Ministry of Defence in Vienna. The talks focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in defence and security matters, building on a previous Letter of Intent signed during the Austrian Chancellor’s visit to India in April 2026.
The Letter of Intent (LoI) on Cooperation in Military Matters aims to establish a framework for collaboration in military affairs, defence technology partnership, and defence policy dialogue. This initiative follows the India-EU Defence and Security Partnership agreement signed on January 27, with a focus on training and capacity building.
Additionally, during the Austrian Chancellor’s visit, a Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism was formed through another LoI. This group aims to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation between India and Austria, with a shared goal of establishing strategic cooperation in combating terrorism.
Furthermore, Ambassador Kumaran engaged with members of the India Friendship Group in the Austrian Parliament to discuss the positive trajectory of bilateral relations. The discussions encompassed various areas such as trade, sustainability, innovation, mobility, and supply chain resilience, with a growing emphasis on security and defence, space, and emerging technologies.
