The Indian Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, visited Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, to assess arrangements for Indian pilgrims on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The official Yatris are expected to arrive later this month.
Ambassador Doraiswami was welcomed at Lhasa Airport by Yang Lahong, Deputy Director General of Foreign Affairs Office of the Tibet Autonomous Region. He also met with Zhao Peng, Vice Chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region, who briefed him on the facilities and preparations for the pilgrims.
Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conducted the draw for selecting Yatris for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026. The Yatra, significant for Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists, was suspended from 2020 to 2025 due to the pandemic and non-renewal of arrangements by China.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra involves trekking at altitudes up to 19,500 feet under challenging conditions. The Yatra is organized with the support of state governments and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, with logistical assistance provided by various organizations in India.
