Arvind Raman, an Indian-born engineering scholar, has been nominated to head the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He emphasized the importance of American innovation and global technology standards in the face of competition from China. Raman shared his journey from India to the US, highlighting the opportunities the country provides.

Raman, who currently serves as the dean of engineering at Purdue University, expressed his commitment to advancing American industrial competitiveness through NIST. He underscored the role of NIST in ensuring trusted standards for American industries and technologies, fostering innovation and global competitiveness. If confirmed, he aims to enhance American innovation by collaborating with industries and entrepreneurs.

Emphasizing the significance of international technology standards, Raman stressed that American leadership in setting these standards reflects American values in global commerce. He discussed the importance of working with Congress to strengthen American leadership in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. Raman also highlighted the need for NIST to collaborate with industry and international partners to shape global technology standards.
