The Indian government has elevated its High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, to the status of a Union Cabinet Minister. This move underscores the significance that New Delhi places on its relationship with Dhaka. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an office memorandum stating that Trivedi’s new status in the Table of Precedence is purely ceremonial.
US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, congratulated Dinesh Trivedi on his new role, emphasizing its importance. Trivedi recently presented his credentials to Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across various sectors for the benefit of both nations. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka shared this information.
In another development, India has resumed issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi citizens after a two-year hiatus. This decision follows a suspension that was imposed due to demonstrations in July 2024. High Commissioner Trivedi announced the resumption of tourist visas during his visit to the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka.
