Mahendragiri, the sixth ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A), has been handed over to the Indian Navy in Mumbai, marking a significant milestone in achieving self-reliance in warship design and construction. These frigates are versatile multi-mission platforms designed to tackle current and future challenges in the maritime domain.
Project 17A of the Indian Navy comprises seven advanced stealth guided-missile frigates, including ships like INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, and INS Mahendragiri. The state-of-the-art frigate Mahendragiri signifies a major advancement in naval design, stealth, firepower, automation, and survivability, showcasing self-reliance in warship construction.
Designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai, the P17A frigates represent a significant leap in indigenous ship design, stealth, survivability, and combat capabilities. These ships are equipped with advanced weapon and sensor systems compared to the previous P17 (Shivalik-class) frigates.
Mahendragiri is the sixth P17A ship delivered to the Indian Navy within less than 17 months from the delivery of the first P17A (Nilgiri). This achievement underscores the nation’s prowess in design, shipbuilding, and engineering, highlighting the Navy’s commitment to self-reliance in ship design and construction.
