Indian Students Choosing Germany, UAE, and New Zealand Over US and UK for Higher Education

Indian students are exploring new frontiers for higher education, moving beyond traditional destinations like the United States and United Kingdom. Germany, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and New Zealand have emerged as preferred choices, offering value-centric education and promising career pathways.

Germany Becomes Top Choice for Indian Students

Following German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s recent visit to India, the growing educational ties between the two nations have come into focus. According to the Leap Scholar Year-End Report 2024-25, Indians now constitute the largest group of international students in Germany, with nearly 59,000 students enrolled.

Why Are Indian Students Choosing Germany?

Germany’s appeal lies in its combination of quality education and financial accessibility. Unlike the US, where visa regulations are tightening and tuition fees are rising, most German public universities offer tuition-free education. Students pay only administrative charges of approximately $1,500 for a full two-year programme.

Arnav Kumar, co-founder of Leap, explains the financial advantage: “The total cost of obtaining a degree in Germany is estimated at just Rs 10-20 lakh – a fraction of what students would spend in the US or UK.”

Beyond affordability, Germany offers an 18-month post-study job-seeking visa and pathways to permanent residency. With Europe’s largest economy facing skilled labour shortages, particularly in technology and STEM fields, Indian graduates find smoother transitions from education to employment.

UAE Emerges as Education Hub for Indian Students

The United Arab Emirates has witnessed remarkable growth in interest from Indian students, with the Leap report documenting a 55x increase in student interest.

What Makes UAE Attractive for Indian Students?

The UAE has established itself as a global education hub by creating free zones that host international branch campuses. For students targeting post-study employment in the Middle East, the region serves as an ideal entry point.

Indian families find additional comfort in the UAE’s geographic proximity – just a 3-4 hour flight from India – and cultural familiarity that traditional Western destinations may not offer.

New Zealand Sees 30x Surge in Indian Student Interest

New Zealand has experienced a 30x increase in interest from Indian students, driven by its immigration-friendly policies and quality education system.

Benefits of Studying in New Zealand

New Zealand’s ‘Green List’ for critical skills in sectors like engineering and health provides streamlined residency pathways for graduates. The country also offers a post-study work visa that allows graduates to work for up to three years.

While tuition fees in New Zealand range from $20,000-30,000 annually – higher than Germany but lower than the US or UK – the investment is offset by strong employment prospects and quality of life.

The Shift in Indian Student Preferences

This transformation in destination choices reflects Indian students’ evolving priorities. Rather than focusing solely on prestigious institutions in English-speaking countries, students now evaluate:

  • Total cost of education including tuition and living expenses
  • Post-study work opportunities and visa policies
  • Pathways to permanent residency
  • Industry demand for skilled professionals
  • Geographic and cultural proximity to India

As traditional destinations like the US implement stricter visa rules and higher costs, Germany, UAE, and New Zealand offer compelling alternatives that balance quality education with financial viability and career opportunities.

The Leap Scholar Year-End Report 2024-25 indicates this trend is likely to continue, as Indian students increasingly prioritize value-driven education choices over conventional prestige-focused decisions.
