The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has decided to withdraw from the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, a significant move following the 2026 Assembly elections and the formation of the TVK-led government. This decision was made during the party’s general council meeting, where 14 resolutions were passed, including formally ending the IUML’s association with the DMK alliance. Future electoral partnerships will be determined later, especially with bye-elections and local body polls on the horizon.
The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has seen notable changes post the April 23, 2026 Assembly elections. The polling for all 234 Assembly constituencies occurred in a single phase, with various alliances and parties contesting. TVK, led by C. Joseph Vijay, emerged as the largest party in its debut election, securing 108 seats. The DMK-led alliance won 73 seats, while the AIADMK alliance came in third with 53 seats.
Despite not reaching the majority mark, TVK formed the government with the support of parties from the DMK alliance, including the IUML. The IUML, having won two seats in the elections, had one of its legislators appointed as a minister in the TVK-led government. The party has now opted to exit the DMK alliance but remains open to future alliances, with decisions on political alignments to be made closer to upcoming electoral contests.
