Indian freestyle wrestlers continued their impressive performance at the U23 Asian Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam, by clinching four additional medals on the fourth day of the competition. Kumar Mohit and Chandermohan stood out with gold medals in their weight classes, while Deepak secured a silver in the 61kg division, and another Indian wrestler named Deepak earned a bronze in the 74kg category.
With these victories, India’s freestyle wrestling team has now amassed a total of six medals, following the gold medal wins by Akshay T Dhere (57kg) and Vicky (97kg) on the previous day. Mohit dominated his 65kg final, claiming a comfortable 12-4 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Oskonbai A. Abdisamatov, securing the top spot on the podium. Chandermohan also impressed by winning the 79kg title with a thrilling 7-6 victory against Kazakhstan’s Yerkhan Abil. In the 61kg final, Deepak engaged in a closely contested 4-4 bout with Kazakhstan’s Nurdanat Aitanov, ultimately settling for the silver medal. Another Deepak secured a bronze in the 74kg category with a commanding 10-0 win over Turkmenistan’s Vatan Annairazov.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the consistency shown over the past two days. He commended Mohit and Chandermohan for their victories and praised both Deepaks for their efforts on the mat. The WFI President congratulated the wrestlers and coaching staff, expressing optimism for more medals by the end of the day.
Kumar Punit added a silver in the 92kg division, falling short with a 1-12 defeat against Kyrgyzstan’s Ulukbek Soorombekov in the championship match. Mor Sachin secured a bronze in the 86kg category with a solid 4-1 win over Boburbek Ruzimboev. Lacky settled for silver in the 125kg category after a 0-10 loss to Kazakhstan’s Rizabek Aitmukhan in the title clash.
The freestyle wrestling action is ongoing, with two more Indian wrestlers preparing for their medal bouts.
