India’s Ambassador to Germany, Ajit Gupte, recently met with Philipp Birkenmaier, Chief of Staff to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, at the Federal Chancellery to discuss the ongoing momentum in the strategic partnership. The Embassy of India in Berlin highlighted the positive developments in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership during the meeting. Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Friedrich Merz also discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation during a meeting at the G7 Summit in France.
The Ministry of External Affairs reported that the leaders reviewed the progress in bilateral engagements and expressed satisfaction with the increased momentum in the strategic partnership. Both countries are celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2026, with a focus on strengthening cooperation in various sectors such as trade, investment, defence, technology, and education. The recent meeting marked the second interaction between the leaders this year.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi for the 8th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations later this year. Additionally, Germany announced the removal of transit visa requirements for Indian nationals, a move that aims to enhance bilateral relations and facilitate easier travel between the two countries. The implementation of this policy change followed Chancellor Merz’s visit to India earlier this year, emphasizing Germany’s commitment to strengthening ties with India.
