India’s Consul General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, held a review meeting with Indian community associations from Shanghai Municipality and Zhejiang Province to discuss preparations for super typhoon Bavi. The Consulate emphasized emergency response measures, including setting up an emergency helpline for the community and diaspora.
The Consulate shared updates on significant travel disruptions in eastern China, reporting numerous flight cancellations and temporary railway suspensions. In Ningbo, 164 flights were canceled, while in Hangzhou and Shanghai, flight cancellations reached 198 and 387 respectively. The Consulate in Shanghai remains open for community and emergency consular services over the weekend.
As Typhoon Bavi approached China’s eastern coast, Chinese authorities heightened emergency response measures. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters activated a Level-IV emergency response for flood and typhoon control in several provinces. Typhoon Bavi, the ninth of the year, is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang Province before moving northwestward.
China issued a red alert for rainstorms and an orange alert for the typhoon, with torrential rains forecasted for various regions. Maximum accumulated rainfall could reach significant levels in parts of Zhejiang, Fujian, and Taiwan. The National Meteorological Centre warned of severe weather conditions within the next 24 hours.
