The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first export of premium litchi from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, to Italy. This marks the entry of Uttarakhand’s litchi into the European market, providing higher returns to farmers, with prices about 25% above domestic rates. The inaugural consignment, weighing one metric tonne, highlights the export potential of Uttarakhand’s horticulture sector, as stated by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
The initiative is expected to promote quality production practices and increase participation in export-oriented horticulture. This development aims to strengthen India’s presence in international fresh fruit markets and showcase premium produce from the Himalayan region. Dehradun litchi, known for its sweetness, red color, aroma, and pulp quality, includes renowned varieties like Rose Scented, Calcuttia, and Bedana.
The agro-climatic conditions of Uttarakhand, especially in Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar districts, contribute to the premium quality and market appeal of the fruit. The successful shipment to Italy was made possible through the collaborative efforts of APEDA, the Uttarakhand government, exporters, farmer-producer organizations (FPOs), logistics partners, and other stakeholders. This collaboration emphasizes the significance of working together to access international markets for Indian agricultural produce.
