The conflict in West Asia involving the US, Israel, and Iran has drawn in the Gulf states, creating a volatile environment. India, with deep economic and strategic ties to the region, has adopted a policy of strategic neutrality. This approach emphasizes dialogue and diplomatic engagement over alignment with any specific side.

India’s stance is crucial due to the region’s significance for its economic security. With nearly nine million Indian expatriates in the Gulf region, which contributes over $50 billion annually in remittances, India’s interests are substantial. Moreover, the Gulf Cooperation Council is one of India’s major trading partners, and the stability of the region is vital for India’s energy security.

India’s diplomatic strategy towards West Asia, known as de-hyphenation, allows it to maintain independent relationships with Israel, Iran, and the Arab Gulf states. This approach enables India to engage with these actors without being dictated by their tensions. For instance, India cooperates with Israel on defense and technology while recognizing Iran’s importance for regional connectivity projects like the Chabahar port.

During the ongoing conflict, India has refrained from endorsing any military action and instead emphasized diplomatic solutions and respect for sovereignty. This cautious approach enables India to maintain dialogue with all parties without jeopardizing critical relationships. India’s balanced stance provides economic advantages during geopolitical disruptions, allowing for diversified energy imports, enhanced bargaining power in global energy markets, and protection of its economic network in the region.

India’s strategic neutrality in the West Asia conflict showcases a pragmatic understanding of geopolitical realities. By balancing relations with key players in the region, India safeguards its interests while positioning itself as a stabilizing force. This approach, guided by strategic autonomy and plurilateralism, allows India to navigate complex global dynamics and convert challenges into opportunities.
