India’s achievements in various sectors are catching Indonesia’s eye as a reliable source of technology, policy concepts, and development solutions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming trip to Indonesia from July 6 to 8 signifies a shift in the partnership between the two nations towards more progressive collaboration. Government officials highlighted that India’s successful public policy models, spanning food security, digital governance, healthcare, agriculture, and defense, are becoming valuable benchmarks for Indonesia’s development journey.
India’s digital public infrastructure success has led to significant collaboration opportunities. Indonesia’s Open Network (ION), inspired by India’s ONDC model, aims to establish a more open and inclusive digital marketplace for over 65 million micro, small, and medium enterprises. The first live transaction of this collaboration is expected during the Summit between PM Modi and President Prabowo Subianto on July 7. Indonesia has sent multiple delegations to India to learn from its digital infrastructure and social welfare schemes like the Public Distribution System (PDS) and AgriStack.
The proposed UPI-QRIS linkage is anticipated to enable seamless cross-border payments for travelers and businesses in both countries, potentially transforming the business landscape for Indian entities with interests in Indonesia. Additionally, Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meals program draws inspiration from India’s Mid-Day Meal scheme, while its Red and White Village Cooperatives initiative is exploring partnerships with India for affordable medicines through the Jan Aushadhi model, enhancing healthcare access in rural areas.
India’s digital partnership with Indonesia is evolving beyond sharing successful models to actively contributing to the development of Indonesia’s next-generation digital infrastructure. Indonesia’s Digital Nusantara initiative aims to establish a unified national digital infrastructure, with Indian technological expertise playing a crucial role in this endeavor. The collaboration is extending to defense as well, with Indonesia and India cooperating on defense manufacturing, technology transfer, military training, and maritime endeavors.
As PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia approaches, the deepening knowledge partnership is emerging as a cornerstone of bilateral relations, fostering innovation, economic progress, and long-term strategic cooperation. These joint initiatives underscore a broader trend where India’s development path is not only benefiting its citizens but also serving as a blueprint for friendly nations.
