The total installed capacity of wind energy projects in India has hit 57,443 MW, as disclosed by the government. During the fiscal year 2025-26, these projects generated 106 billion units of power, according to Union Minister of State for Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik. The minister highlighted a consistent increase in power generation from wind energy projects over the past three financial years.

India secured the 4th global rank in wind energy installation by December 31, 2025, as per the ‘GWEC Report 2026’. The government has been actively promoting renewable energy development, including wind energy, through various initiatives. This includes funding for new transmission lines and sub-station capacity under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme to facilitate the evacuation of renewable power.

To support the rising renewable energy trajectory, the government has waived Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for the inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects commissioned by June 30, 2025, and beyond. A transmission plan has been devised until 2030 to enhance the necessary infrastructure. Additionally, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) up to 100 percent has been allowed under the automatic route to attract investments in the sector.

In a bid to boost renewable energy consumption, the government has enforced Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) and Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) trajectories until 2029-30. Non-compliance with RCO by designated consumers under the Energy Conservation Act 2001 will result in penalties. The government has also introduced Revised Standard Bidding Guidelines for tariff-based competitive bidding processes for various renewable energy projects.

Furthermore, schemes like Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for Offshore Wind Energy Projects have been initiated. The government has issued the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, allowing net-metering up to five hundred Kilowatt or the electrical sanctioned load, whichever is lower. Moreover, the “National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023” has been put into effect.
