The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad has achieved a significant milestone by conducting 502 successful kidney transplants in 2025, making it the top government hospital for such procedures in India. This includes various types of transplants like cadaver transplants, swap transplants, paediatric transplants, and robotic kidney transplants, with 170 patients coming from other states. Dr. Pranjal Modi, the Director of IKDRC, mentioned that a total of 502 kidney and 86 liver transplants were performed in the same year, with many patients benefiting from the Ayushman Bharat- Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya (AB-PMJAY) scheme.
The hospital’s team of highly skilled doctors at IKDRC is known for their expertise in utilizing advanced technology for kidney transplants. Dr. Pranjal Modi, who also serves as the Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University of Transplantation, highlighted the increasing number of robotic kidney transplants being carried out at the institute. Last year, 43 robotic kidney transplants were conducted, and the aim for the current year is to surpass 100 such procedures, all funded by the state government.
IKDRC’s primary focus is on offering affordable healthcare services to the underprivileged sections of society. In 2025, a total of 318 transplants were performed under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, showcasing the hospital’s commitment to providing accessible medical care. Besides excelling in kidney transplants, IKDRC has also emerged as a prominent center for liver transplants, with 86 liver transplant surgeries conducted in the same year. The institute not only leads in advanced medical technology but also serves as a model for other medical institutions across the country.
