Intelligence agencies, including the NIA team, are investigating the harassment case of judicial officers in Kaliachak, West Bengal. The agencies are focusing on the overseas connections of the arrested mastermind, Mofakkarul Islam, and his associate, YouTuber Akramul Bagani. Islam and Bagani were apprehended at Bagdogra Airport by CID officers while attempting to flee the state.
Since their arrest, social media has been abuzz with posts supporting them, some even from abroad. This surge in international support has prompted the agencies to delve into the overseas links and activities of the accused, particularly Islam. The social media accounts of other YouTubers and influencers who have shown solidarity with Bagani are also under scrutiny.
The NIA team has obtained CCTV footage of the incident where seven judicial officers, including three women, were held captive in Kaliachak. They are closely examining footage showing Islam addressing the crowd from a vehicle roof with incendiary messages. Additionally, the NIA has gathered CCTV footage of road blockades in Kaliachak on the same day.
Following a Supreme Court directive, the ECI has entrusted the investigation of the case to either NIA or CBI. Eventually, the ECI decided to assign the probe to the NIA.
