Following the release of the candidate list for Assembly polls, internal conflicts within the Trinamool Congress have surfaced in various constituencies since Tuesday night. In Khandaghosh and Monteswar Assembly constituencies in East Burdwan district, disputes arose immediately after the candidates’ names were announced.
Resentment grew within the party ranks in the Khandaghosh constituency after Nabina Bag was named as the party candidate. Some leaders and workers warned that unless the candidate is changed, several Trinamool functionaries, including the Block President and multiple Zonal Presidents, would resign from their positions and stay inactive during the election campaign.
A group of Trinamool leaders, from the Block President to several Zonal Presidents, expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that the party now favors those who betray its interests from within. They alleged that long-time party supporters who have faced hardships for the party are being marginalized within the organization.
In Monteshwar constituency, chaos ensued following the announcement of Siddiqullah Chowdhury as the candidate, leading to factional clashes within the Trinamool Congress. A physical altercation between supporters of Chowdhury and Ahmed Hossain, the President of the Monteswar Panchayat Samiti, occurred in Dignagar village, with reports of bomb hurling and subsequent police intervention to restore order.
In another development, Khageshwar Roy, the outgoing MLA from Rajganj constituency in Jalpaiguri district, resigned from his party post after not being named as a candidate. The new candidate for his constituency is Indian athlete Swapna Barman, who recently joined the Trinamool Congress. Roy, who has been with the party since its inception, expressed disappointment over being overlooked and alleged unfair practices, leading to his resignation.
