Iran’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, has raised concerns about the extensive travel his team has had to endure during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ghalenoei expressed that the constant commuting between Mexico and the United States has taken a toll on his team both physically and mentally.
Ahead of Iran’s crucial match against Belgium in Group G, Ghalenoei disclosed that tournament organizers had granted them more flexibility for their upcoming game against Egypt in Seattle. Despite being based in Mexico throughout the tournament, Iran has been flying to the United States a day before each match and returning immediately after.
Ghalenoei highlighted that the rules would be relaxed for the final group game in Seattle, allowing the team more freedom. However, he questioned why this flexibility was not provided for their earlier matches, emphasizing the impact of excessive travel on their preparations.
The 63-year-old coach expressed concerns about the team’s fatigue due to the constant travel, affecting their mental readiness during a crucial phase of the tournament. Despite these challenges, Iran remains competitive in Group G after securing a draw against New Zealand in their opening match.
The group standings are evenly poised, with Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand all tied on one point each. A positive outcome against Belgium would enhance Iran’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage, while a draw or loss could increase the pressure on them ahead of the final group-stage encounter against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
