Iran strongly criticized the United States for its recent military attacks on Iranian ports, coastal areas, and maritime infrastructure. The Iranian representative at the International Maritime Organisation session in London condemned the strikes, which targeted facilities like the maritime traffic control tower at Chabahar Port and civilian safety equipment. These actions were deemed as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and a threat to civilian lives, seafarers, and marine safety.
The US was accused of hypocrisy for invoking freedom of navigation while attacking crucial maritime safety installations. The Iranian representative highlighted the contradiction in claiming to protect maritime security while destroying infrastructure vital for safe navigation. He attributed the escalation in maritime safety risks to the ongoing aggression by the US and Israel against Iran.
In response to US actions, Iran’s IRGC and army retaliated by targeting American military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar. The US Central Command confirmed conducting strikes to degrade Iran’s capability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. These strikes included hitting numerous Iranian military targets along Iran’s coastline, such as air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, and naval capabilities.
