Iran appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei. Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric with significant influence in Iran’s security and economic networks, was chosen by the Assembly of Experts. This decision grants him ultimate authority over state matters, including the military and judiciary.
The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei is expected to escalate tensions with the United States. President Donald Trump stated that the US should have a say in Iran’s leadership transition. Israel also issued warnings, hinting at potential targeting of the new Supreme Leader. Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader, was killed in a strike amid escalating conflicts with the US and Israel.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in casualties on both sides. The US military reported the death of a seventh American service member due to injuries from Iran’s counter-attack. Iran’s ambassador to the UN mentioned civilian casualties and injuries caused by the US-Israeli military campaign. Despite US calls for surrender, Iranian leaders have shown no intention of backing down.
Israel has continued targeting senior Iranian officials. Recently, Abolqasem Babaian, head of the military office of the Supreme Leader, was killed in an Israeli airstrike. Tehran residents witnessed airstrikes causing significant damage to oil storage facilities, leading to hazardous material release. Iran condemned the attacks as a dangerous escalation and accused the aggressors of war crimes.
