Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, expressed gratitude towards Russia for its solidarity and backing of diplomacy amidst rising tensions with the United States. Araghchi, during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg, highlighted the strong strategic partnership between the two nations and appreciated Russia’s support for peace efforts in the region. Putin, in response, reiterated Russia’s commitment to assisting Iran in achieving peace swiftly and praised the Iranian people for their resilience in defending their sovereignty.
Araghchi conveyed messages from Iran’s Supreme Leader and President to Putin, emphasizing Iran’s determination to resist US aggression. He acknowledged Russia’s unwavering support for Iran, describing the bilateral relations as a high-level strategic partnership that will continue to strengthen irrespective of external circumstances. Araghchi’s visit to Russia follows discussions in Oman and coincides with ongoing tensions in West Asia.
The diplomatic engagement between Iran and the US saw a temporary ceasefire from April 8, followed by initial talks on April 11-12 aimed at resolving the conflict. However, the negotiations collapsed after 21 hours. The visit to Russia signifies Iran’s pursuit of regional consultations and collaboration, aligning with Russia’s shared perspectives on international affairs and mutual interests.
