Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly reacted to US President Donald Trump’s comments accusing NATO allies of not fully supporting the US during military operations in Afghanistan. Meloni emphasized the significant solidarity demonstrated by NATO after the 9/11 attacks, stating that NATO activated Article 5 for the first time in history in response to the attacks.
Meloni highlighted Italy’s substantial military involvement in Afghanistan, including the deployment of troops and leadership of Regional Command West. She pointed out the sacrifices made by Italy, with 53 soldiers killed and over 700 wounded during combat operations and security missions in Afghanistan.
In response to Trump’s remarks questioning NATO allies’ support, Meloni stated that downplaying the contributions of NATO countries is unacceptable, especially when coming from an allied nation. She underscored the importance of respect in maintaining the solidarity within the Atlantic Alliance and reaffirmed the enduring relationship between Rome and Washington.
Trump’s comments, made during an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, raised concerns and backlash in the UK and other NATO countries. Many European leaders viewed Trump’s statements as dismissive of the longstanding cooperation among allies and expressed uncertainty about NATO’s support for the US if needed.
