The Jain community in India is in mourning after a devastating road accident in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, claimed the lives of two Jain Sadhvis and left another critically injured. The incident, which occurred on May 20 near the Collectorate in Rewa’s Civil Lines area, involved a speeding car striking the Sadhvis who were on a religious foot journey. Enraged by the tragedy, the community has planned peaceful demonstrations on May 25 to demand justice and improved safety measures for Jain ascetics.

The victims included Shrutmati Mata from Sagar district, who was a disciple of Acharya Shri Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj and died on the spot. The other two Sadhvis, identified as Upsamiti Mata from Tamil Nadu and Arika Mata from Jabalpur, suffered critical injuries and were hospitalized, with one on ventilator support and the other succumbing to injuries. The driver, Rashid Ali Shah, fled the scene but was later apprehended by police after a high-speed chase covering nearly 270 kilometers near Jabalpur.

Video footage circulating on various media platforms clearly shows the car veering towards the Sadhvis as they walked along the road’s edge. The driver faces charges under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for reckless driving and hit-and-run. The tragic incident has deeply shaken the Jain community, prompting concerns and calls for a thorough investigation to dispel suspicions of any foul play.

Community leaders have urged for calm and emphasized the importance of accountability and enhanced security for Jain monks and nuns who undertake barefoot journeys as part of their religious practices. Senior Jain monks, including Muni Shri Praman Sagar Ji, have encouraged the community to remain patient and composed during this challenging period. Rajya Sabha member Naveen Jain has also extended condolences and solidarity to the grieving community.

The Madhya Pradesh government has pledged strict action against the accused, acknowledging the vulnerability of Jain ascetics on public roads and the pressing need for improved road safety measures. As preparations for peaceful protests intensify, the Jain community unites in seeking justice for the departed Sadhvis and safeguarding their religious leaders. The upcoming demonstrations are anticipated to draw significant participation, reflecting the community’s shared sorrow and determination for justice.
