Jakub Mensik secured Czechia’s win against Norway at the United Cup by defeating Casper Ruud 7-5, 7-6(6). This victory, along with Barbora Krejcikova’s earlier win over Malene Helgo, resulted in a 2-0 triumph for Czechia in the Group D match, eliminating Norway from the competition. Mensik, aged 20, became the second-youngest player to achieve a singles victory in United Cup history, following Stefanos Sakellaridis in 2023.
Mensik displayed composure in crucial moments, breaking Ruud at 5-5 in the first set and then serving for a one-set lead. Despite a stumble at 5-4 in the second set, Mensik recovered and eventually won the match. In the second-set tie-break, he overcame a 3/5 deficit by winning five of the next six points, showcasing his resilience on the court.
The young talent, who won the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami last year, showcased his skills under pressure, delivering a forehand pass cross-court to save a set point at 5/6 in the second-set tie-break, as reported by ATP. Earlier in the competition, Barbora Krejcikova, a two-time major singles champion, also contributed to Czechia’s success by defeating Helgo 6-4, 6-3.
