Under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)-Har Ghar Jal initiative launched in 2019, more than 2.72 lakh rural households in villages now have tap water supply. The mission’s goal is to ensure potable water access to every rural household through tap connections at a service level of 55 liters per capita per day of prescribed quality.
At the program’s inception in August 2019, only 17 percent of rural households, totaling 3.23 crore, had tap water connections. However, as of February 10, states and Union Territories have reported providing around 12.56 crore additional rural households with tap water connections.
Out of the total 19.36 crore rural households in the country across approximately 5.86 lakh villages, around 15.69 crore households in 5.82 lakh villages now have tap water supply. The total expenditure under the JJM by the Centre, state governments, and Union Territories from 2019-2020 to January 28, 2026, amounts to Rs 4.19 lakh crore.
Steps taken to expedite the planning and implementation of JJM include joint discussions, finalization of saturation plans, regular reviews, capacity-building workshops, and online monitoring through the JJM–Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) and JJM–Dashboard. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs also supports states financially and technically through schemes like Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and AMRUT 2.0.
