Pakistan’s Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) party held protest demonstrations in Karachi due to the city’s worsening water crisis. The JI warned of escalating protests, including sit-ins and a strike, if authorities do not address the issue. The central protest took place outside the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) building, causing traffic disruptions on M.A. Jinnah Road.
Elected JI local government representatives led the protest, highlighting issues such as persistent water shortages and the tanker mafia. The protestors demanded the completion of the K-IV water supply project and action against water theft. Karachi faces a water shortfall of over 600 million gallons per day, leading to irregular supplies and reliance on expensive private tankers.
Addressing the crowd, JI Karachi acting chief Saifuddin criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government and the city mayor for neglecting Karachi’s problems. He mentioned that despite being an economic hub, Karachi suffers from severe water shortages. Saifuddin warned of further actions, including sit-ins and a strike, if the water crisis persists unresolved.
