James Sangma of the National People’s Party (NPP) has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya. Sangma emerged as the sole candidate for the parliamentary seat, leading to his uncontested victory.
Sangma, a senior NPP leader and former state minister, was the official candidate of the ruling MDA-II government in Meghalaya. He expressed gratitude to the legislators and alliance leadership for their support and pledged to represent the state effectively in Parliament.
The biennial election was necessitated by the upcoming expiration of incumbent Rajya Sabha member Dr Wanweiroy Kharlukhi’s term. Kharlukhi, also from the NPP, is set to complete his six-year tenure in June and has expressed his intention to step back from active parliamentary politics.
The NPP-led ruling coalition in Meghalaya holds a strong majority in the Legislative Assembly, ensuring Sangma’s smooth election without opposition. With his unopposed victory, James P.K. Sangma will serve in the Rajya Sabha for the next six years, succeeding Dr Kharlukhi and bolstering the NPP’s representation in Parliament.
