Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent visit to India for the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit signifies the enduring relationship between the two countries. This visit underscores the significance of the annual bilateral summits between India and Japan, which were initiated in 2006 under a ‘Strategic and Global Partnership.’
During the summit, held in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Takaichi engaged in discussions covering various aspects of the bilateral relationship, including trade, investment, economic security, energy, defense, and technology cooperation. Japan pledged a substantial investment of USD 62 billion in India over the next decade and signed agreements in crucial sectors like energy resilience, economic security, and artificial intelligence.
The visit also saw the signing of a defense co-development pact aimed at enhancing maritime security and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, both nations explored joint initiatives in clean energy, with a specific focus on green ammonia, biogas, and oil and gas exploration. The commitment to projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project further solidifies the strong ties between India and Japan.
