The Jharkhand High Court has upheld the life imprisonment of Rahul Verma and Lakhan Verma in the murder case of Dhanbad’s Additional District and Sessions Judge Uttam Anand. The court, led by Justice Rongon Mukhopadhyay, rejected the appeals of the convicts, affirming the trial court’s decision.
Describing the incident as an assault on the judiciary, the High Court dismissed the criminal appeals filed by the two convicts. The duo had contested the sentence given by the CBI court in Dhanbad but failed to secure any relief from the High Court.
Advocate Sabyasachi represented the appellants during the hearing before the High Court. The case revolves around the tragic death of Judge Uttam Anand, who was fatally struck by an autorickshaw while out for a morning walk in Dhanbad on July 28, 2021.
The incident, captured on CCTV, sparked nationwide outrage and highlighted concerns about the safety of judicial officers. Following a thorough trial, the CBI Special Court convicted autorickshaw driver Lakhan Verma and his associate Rahul Verma of murder, sentencing them to life imprisonment on August 6, 2022.
