Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has instructed officials to promptly assist individuals impacted by a cloudburst in the Thathri area of Doda district. The directive, issued by the J&K Lok Bhavan, specifically tasks the Deputy Commissioner of Doda with delivering immediate relief to affected families. Lieutenant Governor Sinha is actively overseeing the situation post the cloudburst and has engaged with Deputy Commissioner Krishan Lal to ensure swift relief efforts and restoration work.
The Lieutenant Governor communicated with the Deputy Commissioner to evaluate the aftermath of the cloudburst in the Thathri region, noting damage to numerous houses and shops. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries. He emphasized the urgency of providing relief, aiding affected families, and expediting restoration work, including the clearance of NH-244. Despite significant damage to shops, residential houses, roads, and infrastructure, there have been no human losses attributed to the natural calamity.
Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir has a history of vulnerability to cloudbursts, particularly in areas like Bhalesa and Thathri, known for triggering flash floods and landslides. These events often lead to the destruction of local infrastructure, homes, and disruption of key transportation routes. Notable past incidents include a severe cloudburst in August 2025 that claimed the lives of at least four individuals in Doda district, resulting in the destruction of residential houses and bridges.
In June 2026, heavy rainfall caused a localized cloudburst near Thathri, leading to significant debris flow but no casualties. This incident necessitated the issuance of weather warnings. Additionally, in July 2017, a destructive cloudburst struck Thathri town, causing flooding, damaging homes and shops, and tragically resulting in six fatalities. The mountainous terrain and narrow gorges in Doda exacerbate the impact of sudden rains, transforming small streams into hazardous flash floods.
