A journalist, Lala Israfeel, was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in the Musakhail area of Balochistan, Pakistan. Israfeel, who worked for a private TV channel, was attacked while outside his shop, with the assailants fleeing on a motorcycle after the incident. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with no recent threats reported by the journalist.
The Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) expressed deep concern over the killing, emphasizing the distress within the journalistic community. BUJ officials called on Balochistan’s Chief Minister and Provincial Home Minister to promptly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. The incident comes amidst a deteriorating security situation in Pakistan, particularly marked by a surge in terrorist activities in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), terrorist attacks in Pakistan spiked in May, with a significant increase in violence in Balochistan. The report highlighted a rise in casualties, suicide bombings, and kidnappings, underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the region. Compared to the previous month, May saw a 27% increase in terrorist attacks, resulting in a higher number of fatalities and injuries, with Balochistan being the most affected province.
