The Centre has given the green light to the appointment of Justice (Retd.) Anupinder Singh Grewal, a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as the President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ proposal for Justice Grewal’s appointment to this top position in the NCLT was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, as per an official notification from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Justice Grewal takes over from Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, who held the position of NCLT President starting from November 1, 2021, and stepped down earlier this year. The NCLT plays a crucial role as an adjudicatory body for corporate disputes in India, focusing on matters concerning the Companies Act and insolvency proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
Born on March 10, 1964, in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, Justice Grewal embarked on his academic journey at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, where he completed his B.A. (Honours) in History in 1985 and M.A. in History in 1987. He later earned his LL.B. degree from the University of Delhi in 1992, commencing his legal practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court the same year.
