Indian badminton icon Jwala Gutta has initiated a discussion on maternal and infant healthcare by donating nearly 60 litres of breast milk to government hospitals in Hyderabad and Chennai within a year after giving birth. Gutta, a two-time Olympian, highlighted the crucial role of donor breast milk for premature and critically ill newborns in NICUs. She emphasized that even a small amount of donor milk can sustain a fragile 1 kg baby for multiple days.
Breast milk, known for its nutritional benefits, is vital for infant health, especially for premature babies. It contains essential nutrients, antibodies, and enzymes that boost immunity, aid in gut development, and lower the risk of complications like necrotising enterocolitis. Gutta, acknowledging her privilege, mentioned that access to proper nutrition, clean water, and support enabled her to consistently donate milk.
The former shuttler expressed concern over the deteriorating maternal and infant health due to factors like lifestyle changes, pollution, and lack of awareness. Gutta stressed the need for more dialogue on breast milk donation to normalize the practice and increase awareness. She encouraged others to consider donating milk if they have the resources and support to do so.
