In a show of restraint, K.C. Venugopal, the Congress party General Secretary in Kerala, gracefully accepted the decision to appoint V.D. Satheesan as the state’s new Chief Minister. Despite strong support for Venugopal among over 50 Congress MLAs, he publicly endorsed Satheesan after the announcement. Venugopal emphasized the party’s unity over personal ambitions, acknowledging the Congress-led UDF’s significant victory with 102 seats.
Venugopal’s acceptance of the high command’s decision marked the end of intense speculation and lobbying for the top post in Kerala. Despite being a prominent contender with substantial backing, Venugopal prioritized the party’s interests above his own aspirations. He reaffirmed his loyalty to the party leadership, emphasizing the importance of respecting their decisions.
While facing disappointment, Venugopal remained committed to the Congress party’s principles, highlighting his unwavering support for the organizational hierarchy. Dismissing criticisms and cyber attacks, he reiterated his belief in the supremacy of the party leadership. Venugopal also refuted allegations of succumbing to pressure from the IUML, labeling such claims as unfounded.
When questioned about attending Satheesan’s swearing-in ceremony, Venugopal’s response reflected his unwavering dedication to the party.
