Tamil cinema icon Kamal Haasan has expressed his backing for actor and politician Vijay, whose party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the largest party in the recent Tamil Nadu assembly polls. Haasan praised M K Stalin’s political maturity in a social media post on X, emphasizing the need to respect the people’s mandate in forming the government.

Haasan highlighted the unique election outcome where no single party secured a clear majority to govern independently. He underscored the importance of upholding democratic principles and urged elected officials to fulfill their constitutional duties. With Vijay’s party winning 108 seats out of 234, the actor now seeks additional support to reach the majority mark of 118 seats for government formation.

The veteran actor’s statement resonated beyond party lines, advocating for the recognition of the people’s choice in Tamil Nadu. Referring to a Supreme Court ruling, Haasan emphasized the significance of proving majority support within the Legislative Assembly rather than at Raj Bhavan. The delay in the oath-taking process for the elected members was criticized as detrimental to the democratic process and the state’s integrity.
