A delegation from UNICEF met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to commend the state’s efforts in enhancing child health, nutrition, and adolescent development through community involvement. The meeting, held at the State Guest House in Shillong, focused on collaborations in areas such as immunization, maternal and child health, and youth engagement. The delegation praised Meghalaya’s grassroots interventions aimed at improving immunization coverage, reducing maternal mortality, and enhancing nutrition outcomes through community participation.
The UNICEF officials highlighted Meghalaya’s integrated approach to maternal and child health, nutrition, and early childhood development, emphasizing the state’s commitment to achieving zero maternal deaths, zero unimmunized children, and ensuring healthy growth during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. They also acknowledged Meghalaya’s Mission 1000 Days program, launched to combat child stunting and enhance maternal and child health outcomes during the crucial early life stages.
Chief Minister Sangma outlined Meghalaya’s long-term human development strategy, emphasizing the state’s collaborative efforts across departments, programs, and stakeholders to address citizens’ needs from infancy to adolescence. He highlighted the state’s progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, addressing immunization gaps, malnutrition, and promoting adolescent development through data-driven and community-led interventions.
UNICEF representatives appreciated Meghalaya’s focus on adolescent development and youth engagement initiatives, particularly praising the Young People’s Action Group for facilitating youth participation in policy-making and development dialogues. Sangma invited UNICEF to continue supporting the state through technical expertise, documenting best practices, and fostering institutional partnerships to expand successful initiatives.
