In a move to enhance India’s golf landscape and boost sports-led tourism, Kapil Dev, President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), met with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai to discuss the future of golf infrastructure in the state. The meeting, attended by senior officials from the Government of Chhattisgarh and PGTI CEO Amandeep Johl, aimed at fostering a partnership to establish international-standard golf facilities in Nava Raipur for hosting global tournaments.
The talks centered on plans to develop an international championship golf course in Nava Raipur, adhering to global tournament norms. The State Government would assist in land allocation and provide institutional backing, while PGTI would focus on attracting private investments, technical know-how, and global golf collaborations. The ultimate goal is to create a venue capable of hosting major professional tournaments, training academies, and golf tourism initiatives.
Furthermore, discussions explored the potential of expanding professional golf events in Raipur and neighboring regions to bolster Central India’s presence in competitive golf. PGTI emphasized that broadening tournament opportunities beyond major cities could pave the way for new talent, boost youth engagement, draw visitors, and support regional economic growth through sports tourism.
The meeting also touched upon the idea of introducing a Nava Raipur franchise in 72 The League, a new franchise-based professional golf format in India. Such an initiative, if materialized, could contribute to establishing a unique regional sports identity, enhancing fan involvement, attracting corporate partnerships, and positioning Chhattisgarh as a progressive sporting hub with national significance.
Highlighting the correlation between golf development and tourism expansion, PGTI representatives stressed that quality golf infrastructure investments often lead to broader economic ecosystems encompassing hospitality, real estate, conferences, and international sports events. The proposed collaboration aligns with India’s vision of leveraging sports for economic growth and the concept of Viksit Bharat, where emerging cities play a pivotal role in national and global sports networks.
This interaction signifies a significant stride in expanding professional golf into new markets and fostering cooperation between sports bodies and forward-thinking state administrations. With backing from institutions, investment involvement, and PGTI’s event management expertise, Nava Raipur aims to become a premier international golf destination capable of hosting top-tier events while contributing meaningfully to tourism, employment, and regional progress.
