Karnataka Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, hailed the recent agreement between Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana as a significant step to safeguard farmers relying on the Tungabhadra river basin. The three states collaborated to ensure the safety of the Tungabhadra Reservoir and the agricultural communities it supports.
During the inauguration of 33 new spillway gates at the reservoir in Koppal district, CM Shivakumar emphasized the importance of this joint effort in securing the dam and farmers’ livelihoods. He highlighted the quick response to replacing a damaged gate last year, underscoring the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare.
The Chief Minister commended the cooperation among the states and credited Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil for leading the initiative to protect the Tungabhadra Dam. He mentioned discussions on water conservation measures and the construction of a parallel reservoir, emphasizing the historic nature of the agreement.
Shivakumar stressed the shared responsibility of preserving water resources and ensuring sustainable agriculture practices in the region. He also reflected on the historical significance of the Tungabhadra project, tracing its origins to the 19th century and its evolution into a vital irrigation asset in southern India.
