Karnataka Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, stated that the government is scrutinizing beneficiaries of guarantee schemes like the Gruha Jyothi free electricity scheme and the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. He emphasized that the aim is not to review but to verify the correct execution of these schemes. Addressing concerns of misuse, he highlighted instances where the free electricity meant for residential use was being exploited for commercial purposes.
Shivakumar mentioned that around 1.60 crore beneficiaries are benefiting from the 200-unit free electricity provision. He stressed that those using it appropriately for residential needs can continue without disruption. However, he underscored the necessity for accurate beneficiary data to prevent misuse, pointing out issues like multiple electricity meters under one name and misuse in rental properties.
Regarding the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, providing Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to female heads, Shivakumar raised alarms about funds being withdrawn post the beneficiary’s demise. He emphasized the importance of stringent checks and balances to ensure accountability and prevent misuse of withdrawals. Additionally, he announced a significant emergency fund allocation of Rs 2,000 crore for road development in Bengaluru, to be overseen by the city’s minister in charge.
The Chief Minister disclosed that departments have been tasked with submitting reports within 15 days on ongoing programs and challenges in implementation. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive understanding of what can and cannot be achieved, including fulfilling manifesto and budget commitments. Shivakumar also mentioned that discussions on the state’s financial status are pending, awaiting the completion of Cabinet portfolio allocation.
