Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil in New Delhi, urging quick approvals for the Mekedatu project and other water initiatives crucial for irrigation and drinking needs. Emphasizing Karnataka’s commitment to agriculture, Shivakumar highlighted the state’s dryland area and the significance of water projects in agricultural development.
Shivakumar pressed for swift clearance of the Mekedatu reservoir project, noting the Supreme Court’s dismissal of Tamil Nadu’s objections. He called for immediate notification of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II award to aid water project implementation and utilization in Karnataka.
The Chief Minister also sought the release of Central assistance for the Upper Bhadra Project and forest clearances for projects in the Mahadayi basin. He appealed for approvals under national water programs and river-linking projects to optimize Karnataka’s water resources and support farmers.
In a separate meeting with President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Shivakumar discussed various issues, marking his first interactions with the dignitaries since assuming office.
