Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar emphasized that the Congress party played a significant role in establishing key national symbols like ‘Vande Mataram’, the national flag, anthem, Constitution, and Independence. He expressed satisfaction that other parties, including the BJP, are now adopting these symbols. Shivakumar affirmed the party’s respect for ‘Vande Mataram’, stating that it is a part of their program rituals.
Shivakumar recalled a past decision during S.M. Krishna’s tenure as Chief Minister, where Kuvempu’s ‘Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate’ was made the state anthem. He highlighted the inclusive nature of the song, mentioning the peaceful coexistence of various communities. Responding to queries about the possibility of ‘Vande Mataram’ becoming equivalent to the national anthem, Shivakumar deferred the discussion for a later time.
When questioned about his brother’s statement regarding former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar maintained that time would reveal the truth. He remained cryptic about the timing of events, suggesting that clarity would come at the appropriate moment. Regarding a meeting with Priyanka Gandhi, he clarified that his current focus is on the Assam elections and indicated a willingness to address such matters later.
