The Karnataka government has absolved senior IPS officers B. Dayananda, Vikash Kumar Vikash, and Shekhar H. Tekkannavar in connection with the tragic Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede on June 4, 2025, where 11 individuals lost their lives. Departmental proceedings against them under the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, have been concluded.
B. Dayananda, a 1994-batch IPS officer, and Shekhar H. Tekkannavar, a 2014-batch IPS officer, were suspended on June 5, 2025, following the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium. Vikash Kumar Vikash, a 2004-batch IPS officer, was also placed under suspension on the same day. Despite their subsequent reinstatements, inquiries persisted until recently.
The government’s orders dated July 14, 2026, revealed that the disciplinary proceedings have been terminated after a thorough examination of the officers’ defenses and the Administrative Department’s opinion. Both Dayananda and Tekkannavar have been cleared of the charges, with Tekkannavar receiving a cautionary warning to ensure the prevention of similar incidents in the future.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede, which occurred during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory, resulted in the unfortunate loss of 11 lives and injuries to 56 individuals. The incident prompted actions against various police officials and raised concerns about security and crowd management at the venue.
