The Karnataka government is in talks about potentially restricting children’s access to social media due to associated risks. Minister Priyank Kharge mentioned this in the Legislative Assembly following concerns raised by BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar. Kharge highlighted that countries like Finland and Australia have already taken steps in this direction.
Minister Kharge also disclosed the launch of a digital detox program in collaboration with Meta, involving around three lakh children and one lakh teachers. He emphasized the importance of responsible use of Artificial Intelligence and social media, indicating that the matter is currently under discussion.
Suresh Kumar, addressing the issue in the House, cited examples of countries like Australia and Goa that have implemented restrictions on social media for children. He expressed worries about children being exposed to inappropriate content at a young age and emphasized the need for protective measures.
Suresh Kumar stressed the bipartisan nature of such decisions, urging for a collective effort beyond political divides. He lamented the lack of focus on essential issues like health and education due to political disagreements, emphasizing the importance of governance that truly serves the common citizen.
