Amid opposition from the BJP and JD(S), the Karnataka government initiated a campaign to provide free caste and permanent residence certificates statewide. Chief Minister Shivakumar emphasized the importance of the permanent residence certificate, recognized by the Election Commission for electoral rolls.

The program, inaugurated by CM Shivakumar at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, aims to ensure all residents have essential identity documents and democratic rights. Karnataka becomes the first state to offer free doorstep delivery of permanent residence certificates to around 4.85 crore families, a historic move according to CM Shivakumar.

Stressing the non-partisan nature of the initiative, Shivakumar highlighted the government’s commitment to following Election Commission guidelines. Applications for certificates can be submitted online, at Seva Kendras, or through facilitation centers at the ‘hobli’ level, with forms available from Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

Identity documents are crucial for citizens’ rights and democratic participation, as stated by CM Shivakumar, who emphasized the significance of individual identity for dignity and empowerment. The government’s aim is to streamline services by bringing them directly to citizens’ doorsteps, reducing the need for office visits.

Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister, Dr. G. Parameshwara, along with other officials, were present at the event to support the program’s implementation and encourage citizens to safeguard their permanent residence certificates.
